Are You Interested in a Transportation Service?
Westminster would like to offer a transportation service for families who live in the areas of Coral Gables, South Miami, North Pinecrest, Homestead and Key Largo for the 2010-2011 school year. The service would provide one-way service in the morning to school, on a daily basis, from centralized drop-off and pick-up locations in each of the neighborhoods mentioned.

UPDATE: Haiti Earthquake Relief
Westminster filled FOUR containers for Haiti. One thousand cases of canned foods, 200 cases of evaporated milk, 3,500 individual gallons of water, and over 6,000 cases of bottled water were donated by the Westminster community and its partners. Palmer Trinity filled one container. Mr. D'Adesky informed us that the containers were loaded on the first commercial seafreight vessel to Haiti, and were offloaded last week in Port-au-Prince, using a make-shift ramp that he made with the U.S. Military.

Charity Car Wash to Support Charlee House
The Community Service Club is hosting a car wash on Fri., Feb. 5, from 2:15 p.m. to sunset, to benefit the children at CHARLEE House, a private not-for-profit agency that cares for children who have been abused, abandoned, or neglected.

MS Has a Heart for Haiti!
The Middle School Student Council and the Junior National Honor Society is encouraging their fellow MS students to "Have a Heart for Haiti" and forgo the usual flower and candy sale and instead collect items needed in Haiti. Students are asked to bring in: flashlights, food bars (protein, energy, breakfast), band aids and gauze.

The Elementary Campus has some budding young authors with creative imaginations! These talented students in grades 3-5 get together on Thursdays for an after school club in Ms. Santacoloma's classroom to polish their skills, share their creativity, and write. The young writers are working in teams to write and illustrate their own books with encouraging messages.

WCS Middle School students welcomed former professional football player Don McNeal to chapel on Tues., Jan. 26. McNeal played football at the University of Alabama for legendary coach Paul "Bear" Bryant, and spent his entire professional career with The Miami Dolphins, until retiring in 1989.

Our God is a majestic God. Our sixth grade class had a magnificent experience seeing this face-to-face. As they wrote their research papers on the diversity of animals our Lord has created, we ventured into the zoo for a sleep over. Yes, we did it! Mr. Manoogian, Mr. Heck, Mr. Kaplan, and Mr. Munoz took 47 sixth grade boys into the zoo on Friday night. Their enthusiasm could be seen and heard as they waited for the gates to open.

Recently, WCS 8th grade students attended a showcase hosted by Westminster HS students, faculty and administration to introduce them to HS academics and student life. The MS students were treated to an Advanced Placement Physics experiment on the effect sound waves (music) have on flames, and several current HS students shared academic, athletic, fine arts and student life experiences with them.

WCS Participates in Cultural Exchange with French Students
Westminster Christian School is proud to participate in the Friends of American Cultural Exchanges (FACES) Program again this year. From February 5-19, seven French students who attend a private Catholic school in Béthune, a city in Northern France near Belgium, will visit WCS. Hosted by WCS students and their families, this immersion program will give both WCS and French students a chance to learn about a different culture. WCS students are encouraged to practice their French with native speakers while the French students are exposed to Miami's culture and a Christian high school.

Westminster Faculty Develop Software to Accelerate Student Learning
In January, Westminster Computer Application students took part in an experimental teaching technique using "Mastery," a computer program created by WCS teacher David J. Bouwsma, and retired Westminster teacher Linda Warner. "Mastery" taught the Computer Application students to learn more quickly by using color changes and sounds as they studied computer jargon from college-level computer literacy. A copyrighted program that contains two patentable inventions, "Mastery" teaches students by interacting with them. It speaks to them and feeds them blue light to make yellow light brighter and rewards them with sounds.

On January 29, nine members of the WCS Science Club spent the night camping in the Everglades. Students were treated to a full moon that happened to be at perigee (the point nearest to the earth), which made it look even bigger and brighter.

Sophomore Bailey Kram Stands Out at Thespian Festival
WCS Sophomore Bailey Kram was selected as the Critic's Choice in the Publicity Director category at the District Eight Thespian Festival. From all the students entered from schools throughout Miami-Dade County, Bailey's publicity plan for the play, "The Rainmaker," was chosen as the best. Last year, Bailey also received a Superior in the same category.

WCS Art Students Recognized at 2010 Scholastic Art Awards
Approximately 1,800 individual artworks were entered into the 2010 Scholastic Art Awards regional show at the Miami Art Museum. Of the only 200 pieces that were chosen for the show, four were by Westminster students and two pieces won awards.
