Music
In the preschool and kindergarten music classes, a variety of musical activities are explored weekly to awaken your child's imagination and to enhance language development, symbolic thinking, motor skills, and social interaction. Stories, songs, listening and movement activities center around special themes. Rhythm instruments, colorful scarves, puppets, hoops and other creative items are used in every class. Skills build on each other from semester to semester and year to year. Cultural, seasonal, and spiritual songs are learned to enhance learning and to prepare for one large and several small programs each year. The foundations of music are developed as fun and friendship are enjoyed!
In the first through third grades, music classes capitalize on the child's love of group music making. This program incorporates singing, dancing, drumming, composing and improvising on rhythmic and melodic instruments. Notation, composition, and music reading are incorporated in every class. These skills provide readiness for whatever musical direction the child will take later - Music Movers (4th and 5th grade chorus), Elementary Band, or Elementary Orchestra. One large and several small programs are also performed by these talented students each year.
Even though these students are young, their potential is huge! Just as we teach children reading readiness fundamentals at an early age, it is also important to establish a love and appreciate music in its many forms in young children. At Westminster, this love for music starts the very first day and follows them throughout their lives!
